Attention Nonprofits- Don't lose your tax exempt status for not filing your Form 990!

Most tax-exempt organizations, other than churches, must file a yearly return or notice with the IRS.  If an organization does not file as required for three consecutive years, federal law requires that the organization automatically lose its tax-exempt status.  Loss of exempt status means an organization must file income tax returns and pay income tax, and its contributors will not be able to deduct their donations.

Athough the May 17, 2010 deadline for organizations that use the calendar year as their fiscal year has passed, the IRS is urging the many small tax-exempt organizations that have yet to file their required information return to do so.  The IRS will do what it can to help these organizations avoid losing their exempt status.

This only applies to organizations with $25,000 in gross receipts or less.  These organizations only have to file an e-Postcard/Form 990-N with 8 items of basic information; the Form 990-N/e-Postcard can be filed online.  See http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=169250,00.html

Organizations with more than $25,000 in gross receipts who have missed the May 17 deadline should contact Philadelphia VIP for assistance.  All charities with questions should contact jvolunteer@phillyvip.org.

The above information applies to charities.  For information on private foundation filing requirements, go to: http://www.irs.gov/charities/foundations/article/0,,id=141361,00.html
